Reported Fires in the Bayview Marinas

May 14, 1977 – Vista Bay - 12 boats burned and sunk. The boat shed and most of the outer dock of the marina was destroyed. Cause believed to be a charcoal grill tipped over onto the dock.

May 4, 1986 – Boileou’s – Two-story float home and 33-foot boat fire at the end of the 630-foot dock. Float home and boat destroyed, adjoining structures and dock with minor damage. Bayview Firefighter Gerald J. Franz died at this fire. He inhaled smoke, collapsed on the dock, and later died from a heart attack.

June 13, 2001 – Boileou’s – Boat fire inside a boat shed, a vacuum cleaner ignited fuel vapors. Destroyed at least 4 boats, two boat sheds, two float homes, and the electrical transformer shed, plus significant damage to the dock.

Summer 2004 – Scenic Bay, D Dock – A discarded cigarette ignited a portion of the dock. It was quickly extinguished by citizens, but caused dock damage.

March 20, 2009 - Patio Floating Restaurant at Boileou's Dock

August 11, 2009 - An outboard motor on a boat caught fire at Boileou's dock, but was extinguished by a private citizen. The fire department was not informed until 6 days later.

Marina Fire Safety Rules

No charcoal or wood fired grills (propane grills are permitted as long as they are on a stable surface, attended at all times, and there is a fire extinguishers within 5 feet of the grill).

No fireworks

No open flames including candles

No open flames or sparks within 50 feet of fuel docks or fueling operations.

No portable fuel containers can be used to fill boat fuel tanks, use the 2 fuel docks in Bayview.

Smoking is highly discouraged and may be prohibited in the future

Smoke detectors required in all float homes (each sleeping area and each level) and in all boats with cabins

Fire extinguishers required in all float homes and in all boats

All fires and fuel spills must be reported to the fire district immediately

All sinking boats and structures must be reported to the fire district immediately

Marina Firefighting Hose Cart developed by the Timberlake Fire Protection District in the spring of 2009 as an expedient way to lay hose down the docks and begin suppression within 4 minutes upon arrival of the fire apparatus.

Marina owners may opt to use these hose carts in combination with other fire prevention measures as an alternative to dry standpipes.
